Step back into Texas cotton history with the story of the Goodman Gin. Built around 1875 near Tyler, this rare mule-powered gin operated without steam or electricity and processed up to six bales a day. Its unique construction and press design offer insight into early cotton production. Moved to Lubbock in the 1970s, it now stands at the FiberMax Center for Discovery, preserving regional agricultural heritage and ingenuity.
Lacee Hoelting, director of the FiberMax Center, holds agriculture degrees from Texas Tech and Texas A&M. Passionate about history and agriculture, she champions a new literacy wing for young learners. Laura Johnson, education manager for the wing, holds degrees from Texas Tech and University of Oklahoma (OU) and brings a background in teaching and museum studies.
