June Steele will present her research on three women who made important cultural contributions during the early period of white settlement on the Panhandle Plains of West Texas. Mollie Abernathy, Mae Simmons and Phebe Warner came from very different backgrounds, but set their minds and hearts to improving their West Texas communities and became boosters of this unique part of North America.
June Steele earned her master's degree in history at Texas Tech University under the direction of Paul H. Carlson. For the past 25 years she has taught World History, World Geography, U.S. History and AP Human Geography at Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas.
