David D. Schafer, a retired park ranger, earned his master's degree in history from Pittsburg State University. He served in the National Park Service for 32 years. In addition to researching and writing, he leads trolley tours of historic Fredericksburg. Schafer and co-author Todd Mildfelt published a book about James Montgomery.
