The average Texan would be surprised to know that Mormons played an important part in the settlement of the Texas Hill Country. Followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints would be equally surprised that the first temple west of the Mississippi was at Zodiac, near Fredericksburg, not in St. George, Utah. This presentation will focus on the reasons for their presence in early Texas, describe known Mormon memorabilia and discuss a Texas Supreme Court decision in which a Mormon farm in Gillespie County played a decisive part.
