The Pinta Trail, once used by Native Americans, explorers and settlers, connected San Antonio to the Presidio San Sabá (near modern Menard, Texas) and was used by the Spanish to reach Santa Fe well into the 19th century. In 1845, German immigrants established a route from New Braunfels to Fredericksburg, linking it to the Pinta Trail for European settlers. In 1847, Ferdinand von Roemer traveled this path with John Meusebach to Fredericksburg and beyond. The trail, later known as the Upper Emigrant Trail, guided Forty-Niners to the California gold fields under Fort Martin Scott’s protection. Instructor Eric Hammersen, Ph.D., has spent 50 years in national security in the U.S. and abroad.
