In this engaging and informative class, we will explore the fascinating history of Ukraine, a nation with deep-rooted values of freedom and democracy, much like Texas. Through a comparison of Ukraine's geography, historical experiences, and the spirit of its people, we will uncover the many parallels that unite these two places in their love for independence. We'll delve into the motivations behind Ukraine's unwavering resistance against Russian aggression, shedding light on the origins of the ongoing conflict. Additionally, we'll discuss how events in Ukraine may impact our lives in the U.S. and answer pressing questions from participants. Join us for an insightful session on why the fate of Ukraine matters to us all.
Dr. Sergiy Nesterenko is an accomplished orthopedic spine surgeon based in Lubbock, Texas, where he specializes in the management of degenerative spine conditions. Born and raised in Ukraine, Dr. Nesterenko graduated from Dnipro State Medical University in 2002. His early medical career included an orthopedic residency and fellowship in reconstructive orthopedics in Ukraine. Driven by a passion for advancing his expertise, he relocated to the United States, where he completed significant orthopedic research at the Mayo Clinic, an orthopedic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and a spine surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
Since 2014, Dr. Nesterenko has been practicing at Grace Clinic in Lubbock, Texas. In addition to his clinical work, he is deeply involved in the American Ukrainian Medical Foundation (AUMF), where he serves as secretary and board member. His work with AUMF focuses on supporting Ukraine's medical community through translation of essential medical resources, particularly in military medicine. He collaborates with partners such as the Ukrainian Resuscitation Council and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) to improve prehospital care in Ukraine's challenging environment.
