The normal function of the arteries in young adults will be explained. The changes in the function and structure of the arteries will be explain and how arterial dysfunction affects blood pressure, glucose control, and the skeletal muscles. The loss of skeletal muscle mass, known as sarcopenia, will be explained. The response to strength training is reduced with aging. This phenomenon is call anabolic resistance, The reduced capacity of older adults to increase muscle mass in response to strength training. The response to resistance training can be improved with the addition of dietary supplementations that improve arterial function. I will present findings of my studies and others on this topic.
Dr. Arturo Figueroa has 24 years of experience conducting applied exercise physiology studies in postmenopausal women. His academic background includes MD and PhD in Applied Physiology. He is a cardiovascular physiologist with research interest on the association of arterial function and muscle fitness (mass, strength, and performance) in middle-aged and older adults with obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. His research has focused on the impact of strength training and nutritional supplementations on the age-and obesity-related cardiovascular and metabolic disturbances in postmenopausal women.
