Strong muscles allow us to enjoy movement and live independently. However, with age, muscle mass and strength decrease, which can affect other body systems (e.g., bone, metabolism). Thankfully, healthy habits can minimize or reverse loss of muscle mass and strength. This course will provide an overview of age-related muscle changes and potential impacts on other body systems. An interactive discussion of healthy habits to counteract these changes and simple exercise demonstration will follow. The goal: AGE STRONG! Athletic wear is encouraged, not required. All fitness levels welcome. Practicing the exercises (a few simple moves) is 100% optional. Danielle Levitt, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Physiology at Texas Tech. Her research is funded by the National Institute on Aging (R01AG084597) and the National Strength & Conditioning Association Foundation.
