The West Texas Utilities Co. served communities as electric service provider from the Red River to the Rio Grande border, from Mason to Marfa and into the Panhandle. Eventually a publicly-owned company headquartered in Abilene, WTU began as Abilene Light and Water. WTU was integral to Abilene's success. A landmark ice and power plant along Cedar Creek has been named to the National Register of Historic Properties. Through documents, photos and first-hand accounts, we will learn about the role WTU played in the economic development of this large swath of West Texas.
