This course covers impression evidence in relation to firearms. Students will be introduced to gunshot residue (GSR) and a term in investigations called stippling. The course will cover different types of firearms, different powders and round-nose compared to hollow-point projectiles. All of these components of a firearm are used in determining distances in a shooting incident.
John Barnes is an assistant professor of practice in the Forensic Science Graduate Program at Texas Tech. He is a retired New Mexico State Police criminal agent with over 30 years of experience investigating white collar crimes, death investigations and forensic analysis. Barnes holds a bachelor’s in criminal justice administration, a master’s in criminal justice, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in forensic science researching bloodstain pattern analysis, firearms and tools marks, and crime scene reconstruction.
