This special screening and lecture at the newly reopened Wallace Theater explores the 1956 sci-fi classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." While often remembered as a tale of alien invasion, the film serves as a powerful reflection of Cold War-era anxieties in 1950s America. Before the film, participants will attend a brief lecture on how fears of communism, conformity, loss of individuality, McCarthyism and nuclear uncertainty shaped filmmakers and audiences during the early Cold War period.
Assistant Professor Cathrine J. McMahan teaches U.S. History at South Plains College. She holds a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Texas Tech and an M.A. in History from Sam Houston State, focusing on war, violence and their socio-cultural impacts.
