Thousands of American servicemen never made it home after WWII. Some 10,000 soldiers lie buried in The Netherlands American Cemetery at Margraten, and local Dutch families have adopted and tended their graves since 1944. An effort began in 2009 to locate pictures of these fallen young men to give them a face. To date, more than half now have a photo displayed at their headstone on special remembrance days. Walter Wilhoit is a retired school administrator with the Department of Defense Education Activity which educates military-connected children on U.S. military installations around the world. He currently volunteers for several organizations in the Lubbock community.
